The $23 million Nasher Museum of Art, designed by architect Rafael Viñoly, will open Oct. 2.
Swartz will begin her position on Aug. 8. She will lead efforts to complete the museum’s $23 million campaign, of which $19 million has been raised; to raise funds for its $10 million endowment; to increase membership; and to promote public awareness of the museum.
“I’m very pleased that Rebecca brings such extensive fund-raising experience and knowledge of the art world and the Triangle community to the new Nasher at Duke,” Rorschach said. “She will be centrally involved as the museum emerges as a vital new cultural resource for university students and faculty, the Durham community, and visitors from around the world.”
Swartz comes to the museum with eight years of experience in fundraising, most recently as director of development with PlayMakers Repertory Co. and the Department of Dramatic Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There, she has increased individual giving by 8 percent annually since 2001.
Before that, Swartz was a development officer with Children’s MemorialHospital in Chicago, where she coordinated the effort to raise more than $2 million annually.
“I’m thrilled to join the Nasher at Duke in time for its grand opening celebration and the inaugural year ahead,” Swartz said. “This is a unique opportunity for members of the community to celebrate, experience and forge partnerships with the museum.”
Swartz holds a bachelor’s degree in design from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a master’s degree in arts administration from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
