Atkins Foundation Gives
$2 million for nutrition program

The Robert C. Atkins Foundation has given $2 million to the Duke University School of Medicine to fund an endowed professorship as well as for research, clinical care and education in the areas of nutrition and metabolism.

Wachovia Foundation gift benefits community, Fuqua

The Wachovia Foundation is giving Duke University $1 million for afterschool programs for low-income Durham school children and for Fuqua School of Business programs.

B.N. Duke Scholarship Winners Announced

(From the Duke News Service) Nine recent high school graduates have been selected winners of Benjamin N. Duke Scholarships, which are undergraduate merit awards at Duke University.

The awards cover full tuition, stipends for domestic and international summer services endeavors, and an in-school leadership program to enhance students' studies.

Each year, a faculty committee presents the awards to students from North and South Carolina who demonstrate strong academic performance, outstanding leadership ability and community involvement. Based on estimated tuition rates, this scholarship is worth more than $100,000 to a student enrolled for four years.

This year's recipients are:

  • Carina Elizabeth Barnett-Loro of Durham, N.C., a graduate of Charles E. Jordan High School, and the daughter of Albert Loro and Linda Barnett.
  • David Matthew Braddy of Dillon, S.C., a graduate of Dillon High School, and the son of John and Sandra Braddy.
  • Sarah Hampton Cheatham of Greensboro, N.C., a graduate of Grimsley High School, and the daughter of George and Judy Cheatham.
  • Radharani De of Jamestown, N.C., a graduate of Southwest Guilford High School, and the daughter of Himadri and Sarmila De.
  • Paula Rosine Long of Carrboro, N.C., a graduate of St. Mary's High School, and the daughter of Chris Long and Re Hatem.
  • Meredith Leigh Newmark of Raleigh, N.C., a graduate of Raleigh Charter High School, and the daughter of Craig and Elizabeth Newmark.
  • Anne Jervey Rhett of Charleston, S.C., a graduate of Porter Gaud School, and the daughter of Frank and Anne Rhett.
  • argaret Moore Savage of Charlotte, N.C., a graduate of Charlotte Latin School, and the daughter of Craig and Mitzi Savage.
  • Jeremy Ryan Welch of Greenwood, S.C., a graduate of Emerald High School, and the son of Steve and Susan Welch.

The scholarships were established by The Duke Endowment to honor Benjamin N. Duke, who provided major support to TrinityCollege and later DukeUniversity.
