Duke Honors Distinguished Professors

Duke University has awarded
distinguished professorships to 18 current faculty members. The newly
named professors were recognized at a dinner April 26 at the Durham
Hilton with other university distinguished professors - current and
emeritus.
University-wide appointments
were made as follows:
- Garnett H. Kelsoe, professor
of immunology, was named James B. Duke Professor of Immunology,
effective July 1.
The recipients of chairs established
within specific schools and departments were as follows:
Trinity College of Arts & Sciences:
- Caroline Bruzelius, professor
of art and art history, was named Anne Murnick Cogan Professor
of Art and Art History, effective July 1.
- James S. Clark, professor
of biology, was named Hugo L. Blomquist Professor of Biology, effective
July 1.
- Alexander Keyssar, professor
of history, was named William K. Boyd Professor of History, effective
July 1.
- Gregory Lawler, professor
of math, was named A. Hollis Edens Professor of Mathematics, effective
July 1, 2001
- Philip Stewart, professor
of romance studies, was named Benjamin E. Powell Professor of Romance
Studies, effective July 1.
Divinity School:
- Richard Hays, professor,
was named George Washington Ivey Professor of New Testament, effective
Jan. 1, 2002.
Fuqua School of Business:
- Gerardine DeSanctis, professor,
was named Thomas F. Keller Professor of Business Administration,
effective July 1.
Law School:
- Sara Sun Beale, professor
of law, was named Charles L. B. Lowndes Professor of Law, effective
July 1.
- Robert P. Mosteller, professor
of law, was named Harry R. Chadwick Sr. Professor of Law, effective
July 1.
- Christopher H. Schroeder,
professor of law, was named Charles S. Murphy Professor of Law,
effective July 1.
Nicholas School of the Environment
and Earth Studies:
- Thomas Crowley was named
Nicholas Professor of Earth Systems Science, effective July 1.
- David Hinton, professor,
had been named Nicholas Professor of Environmental Quality, effective
Sept. 1, 2000.
School of Medicine:
- Andrew Berchuck, professor
of obstetrics and gynecology, was named F. Bayard Carter Professor
of Obstetrics and Gynecology, effective July 1.
- Allan Howard Friedman, professor
of neurosurgery, was named Guy L. Odom Professor of Neurological
Surgery, effective July 1.
- Pascal J. Goldschmidt, professor
of cardiology, was named Edward S. Orgain Professor of Cardiology,
effective July 1.
- David A. Schwartz, professor
of pulmonary medicine, was named Walter Kempner Professor of Medicine,
effective July 1.
- Marilyn J. Telen, professor
of hematology, was named Wellcome Clinical Professor of Medicine
in honor of Dr. R. Wayne Rundles, effective July 1.
Two faculty members who last
year received distinguished chairs were also honored at the April
26 dinner. They were:
- Bruce Lawrence, who was
named Nancy and Jeffrey Marcus Humanities Professor of Religion,
effective July 1, 2000.
- Jean O'Barr, director of
the Women's Studies Program at Duke, who was named University Distinguished
Service Professor of the Practice of Women's Studies. The chair
was effective July 1, 2000.
In addition, four new inductees
in the Bass Society of Fellows for Excellence in Teaching and Research
were honored at the dinner. They were:
Trinity College of Arts & Sciences:
- Malachi H. Hacohen, Fred
W. Shaffer Associate Professor of History, effective July 1, 2001,
through June 30, 2006;
- Charles D. Piot, Creed C.
Black Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology, effective July
1, 2001, through June 30, 2006;
Pratt School of Engineering:
- Robert L. Clark, Jeffrey
N. Vinik Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science,
effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2006;
- Craig Henriquez, W. H. Gardner,
Jr. Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, effective July
1, 2001, through June 30, 2006.
