NEWS Krzyzewskis Fund Endowment For Scholarships From the Duke News Service September 5, 2001 Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and his wife Mickie will create the Krzyzewski Family Scholarship Endowment for Duke students from the Carolinas, university President Nannerl O. Keohane announced Wednesday. The $100,000 scholarship, the result of the Krzyzewskis' gift and additional funds from The Duke Endowment of Charlotte, will provide assistance to undergraduates from North and South Carolina. "Mickie and Mike Krzyzewski both do so much for our university," said Keohane. "Their many contributions to our athletic program are well known, and their support of undergraduate academic and residential life at Duke should be, as well. This scholarship fund is the most recent example of that support and all of us at Duke are grateful." The Krzyzewskis are leadership chairs of the "Carolinas Challenge," a Duke fund-raising initiative designed to increase scholarship endowment for undergraduates from the Carolinas, an effort supported and partly funded by The Duke Endowment. "Our children were raised and educated in North Carolina," said Mickie Krzyzewski, "and there isn't a better place to live and learn. We want to be certain that resources are available for all qualified students from our state to attend Duke. We hope our gift will help to make that possible, but we know we need the support of many others to assure that all deserving students from both Carolinas have that chance." The Krzyzewskis have three children: Debbie Krzyzewski Savarino, who graduated from Duke; Jamie Krzyzewski, currently a Duke student; and, Lindy Krzyzewski Frasher, a graduate of Wake Forest University and recent recipient of a master's degree from Pepperdine University. The Carolinas Challenge has raised more than $5 million in endowed scholarship support since it was announced by Keohane and Mike Krzyzewski last September. It is chaired by Dave and Kay Phillips of High Point. Three of Phillips' daughters, Lil, Kate and Bo, attended Duke. Dave Phillips is the chairman of Phillips Industries in High Point. |
