Duke Honors Distinguished Professors

Duke University has awarded distinguished professorships to 23 current faculty members.

The newly named professors were recognized at a dinner April 27th at the Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club with other university distinguished professors — current and emeritus.

University-wide appointments were made as follows:

  • Literature — Toril Moi, professor of literature and Romance studies, was named James B. Duke Professor of Literature, effective July 1.
  • Medicine — Margaret Ann Pericak-Vance, professor of medicine in the section of medical genetics, has been named James B. Duke Professor of Medicine, effective July 1.
  • Computer science — Herbert Edelsbrunner was named Arts and Sciences Professor of Computer Science, effective Aug. 1.
  • Statistics — Mike West, director and professor of statistics and decision sciences, was named Arts and Sciences Professor of Statistics and Decision Sciences, effective Jan. 1, 1999.

The recipients of chairs established within specific schools and departments were as follows:

  • Trinity College of Arts and Sciences
    • Houston A. Baker Jr., was named Susan Fox Beischer and George D. Beischer Arts and Sciences Professor of English in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, effective Sept. 1.
    • Donald A. Berry, professor of statistics and decision sciences, was named Edger Thompson Professor of Statistics in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1.
    • Tim Bollerslev, professor of economics, was named Juanita and Clifton Kreps Professor of Economics in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, effective Sept. 1, 1998.
    • Kenneth A. Dodge, professor of public policy studies, was named William McDougall Professor of Public Policy Studies in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1.
    • Stephen Jaffe, associate professor of music, was named Mary D. B. T. and James H. Semans Professor of Music Composition in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1.
    • R. Bruce Nicklas, professor of zoology and cell biology, was named Arthur S. Pearse Professor of Zoology in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1
    • Richard J. Powell, professor of art and chairman of the art department, was named John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art and Art History in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1.
    • William M. Reddy, professor of history and cultural anthropology, was named William T. Laprade Professor of History in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1.
  • Divinity School
    • Richard Lischer, professor at the Divinity School, has been named James T. and Alice Mead Cleland Professor of Preaching in the Divinity School, effective July 1.
  • Fuqua School of Business
    • E. Allan Lind, professor at the Fuqua School of Business, has been named Thomas A. Finch Jr. Professor of Business Administration in the Fuqua School of Business, effective July 1.
  • School of Law
    • Katharine T. Bartlett, professor at the School of Law, has been named A. Kenneth Pye Professor of Law in the School of Law, effective July 1.
  • School of Medicine
    • Robert Abraham has been named Glaxo-Wellcome Professor of Molecular Cancer Biology in the School of Medicine, effective July 1.
    • James D. Bowie, professor of radiology, has been named Reed and Martha Rice Professor of Radiology in the School of Medicine, effective July 1.
    • Robert M. Califf, professor of cardiology and director of the Duke Clinical Research Institute, has been named Donald F. Fortin, M.D. Professor of Cardiology in the School of Medicine, effective July 1.
    • Henry S. Friedman, professor of pediatric oncology, has been named James B. Powell, Jr. Professor of Pediatric Oncology in the School of Medicine, effective Jan. 1, 1999.
    • Edward C. Halperin, professor of radiation oncology and pediatrics, has been named Leonard Prosnitz Professor of Radiation Oncology in the School of Medicine, effective July 1.
    • Edward W. Holmes, dean of the Duke Medical School and vice chancellor for medical center academic affairs, has been named Walter Kempner Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine, effective Jan. 1, 1999.
    • Gary L. Stiles, professor and chief of the division of cardiology, has been named Ursula Geller Professor for Research in Cardiovascular Diseases in the School of Medicine, effective July 1
    • Keith M. Sullivan has been named James B. Wyngaarden Clinical Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine, effective July 1.
