NEWS 1999 Chafe Named Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education From the Duke News Service July 29, 1999 Duke University Arts and Sciences Dean William Chafe has been named to the additional position of vice provost for undergraduate education with responsibility for admissions and financial aid, Provost Peter Lange announced Thursday. Chafe, who will retain the title and duties of dean of the faculty of arts and sciences, assumes responsibility for policy leadership in academic matters pertaining to Trinity College, the university college attended by most of Duke's undergraduates, as well as in the areas of admissions and financial aid for undergraduates in arts and sciences and the School of Engineering. "This position will provide strong coordination between the office of the provost, the university's undergraduate programs, and the units that support those programs around campus, notably the offices of undergraduate admissions and financial aid." Lange said. A major function of Chafe's new position will be to chair the Undergraduate Administrators Group, "a longstanding committee of academic and student affairs personnel that will more systematically address issues of policy and practice in such key areas of undergraduate education as campus climate, academic performance, and academic integrity," Lange said. Chafe, who also is Alice Mary Baldwin professor of history, was appointed dean of the faculty of arts and sciences in 1995. He previously was chair of the history department and at Duke University. He came to Duke in 1971 as an assistant professor of history, was promoted to full professor in 1979 and named to a distinguished chair in 1988. Chafe received the university's distinguished teaching award in 1973-74 and has received numerous awards and honors for his studies and publications in American history, civil rights, race relations and women's history. In 1998-1999, Chafe served as president of the Organization of American Historians. |
